Happy White wines day 4th August
It's hard to describe exactly the feeling of enjoying a cool glass of white wine in the middle of a scorching summer afternoon. The White Wine Day 4th August is coming soon! This is truly an opportunity for wine lovers to fulfill your white wine collection. From popular summertime choices like Sauvignon Blanc or Pinot Grigio to brand new experiences - Grenache Blanc or Vermentino.
Imagine: Sip a glass of white wine leisurely in the garden and sunbathe; or sip a glass while cooking, listening to music.
And here are some grape varieties, white wine styles, and some wine suggestions worth considering to enjoy this summer.
Speaking of this grape variety, we all know Chardonnay is the most popular white-wine grape in the world with an extremely diverse style. In Bourgogne, which is said to be the birthplace of this grape variety, we can enjoy classic yet sophisticated Chardonnay wines with a smooth structure and delicate fruit flavors; or travel to Napa Valley to enjoy ripe-fruit-aromas and the rich sweetness of oak Chardonnay wines.
A wine with typical acidity in style, great to pair with seafood like a “Fine de claires” oyster dish or cold Bullot, or Snow Crab.
A bottle of wine from Napa valley with mature flavor and structure. This wine goes well with well-prepared and seasoned white meats such as honey-roasted chicken or stewed rabbit thighs with mushroom.
2. Sauvignon Blanc
The second white grape we need to mention along with its popularity is Sauvignon Blanc. With a passionate and fruity aroma and a distinct acidity, this grape variety easily melts your heart when you want a light glass of wine during break time.
Despite not being the birthplace of Sauvignon Blanc, New Zealand, especially the Marlborough region has put Sauvignon Blanc on the map with unique flavors: full of tropical fruit and fresh floral aromas; and cool like the sea. This is a suitable choice for raw dishes such as sushi, sashimi, or Asian salads.
Returning to the country that is considered the home of Sauvignon Blanc - France, Sauvignon Blanc from the Languedoc Roussillon region exhibits more citrus aromas and a thicker body. We can enjoy this wine with light cheese salad or seafood dishes with sour sauce.
3. Wines from many French grape varieties
Besides the "varietal" wines mentioned above (wines from 1 grape variety), we can consider wines with many grape varieties from Bordeaux or Rhone valley. These regions have a long history of wine development with many renowned wineries in the world.
A typical white wine style of Pessac-Leognan region in particular and of Bordeaux in general. In this region, Sauvignon Blanc, which already has its own identity, is enhanced in structure and sensibility with a blend of Semillon and with a hint of secondary oak flavor, making this bottle a World-class white wine one. You can enjoy this wine with European-style fish dishes, served with mushrooms or especially green mussels cooked in white wine onion sauce.
Rhone region is characterized by rustic white wines, ripe fruit aromas with herbs, gentle acidity. You can pair a glass of Delas with a variety of dishes: Cold cuts of chicken and pork; or stewed fish and seafood.
4. Unique Mediterranean Grape Varieties
When it comes to white wine drinking culture, we can hardly ignore the sunny Mediterranean region, where white wines are considered a local drink. Nowhere else can you find a drink to pair with seafood as fresh as this place.
Argiolas Costamolino is made from the Vermentino grape variety from Sardinia island of Italy. It has the characteristic aromas of fresh green berries, salinity, minerality. It goes well with all shellfish dishes such as oysters, mussels, shrimp, or clams.
Another large Mediterranean island is Sicily. Here, Grillo is one of the island's most iconic white grape varieties. Grillo is a natural hybrid between Catarratto, the most widely-grown local grape variety in Sicily and Muscat of Alexandria (Zibibbo), famous both as an edible grape and a grape used for sweet wines. This wine has some resemblance to Sauvignon blanc in good acidity and clear tropical fruit aromas that make it suitable not only for an aperitif but also for a variety of grilled fish dishes accompanied by olive oil and dried tomato.
5. Some other suggestions
Besides all the above wines, there are still plenty of interesting white wines with reasonable prices to try this summer. Here are some surprises for you:
Not a very famous grape variety, but Torrontes is the most interesting white grape variety from Argentina. The sweet aroma of lychee, longan and rose accompanied by gentle acidity makes people fall in love from the first sip. The wine is best suited for an aperitif, afternoon sip or leisurely in a bar after work.
When people think of sweet white wines, they mostly think of Muscat/Moscato grapes. You can try something new from the southwest of France, where there are also sweet wines worth knowing. Made from the typical local grape variety, Gros Manseng, Domaine Du Tariquet Premieres Grvies Demisec offers a sweet and refreshing taste with hints of grapefruit, ripe mandarin and a really long aftertaste. This wine fits all situations so why not order one and take a sip?
