Fun fact 1:

Château Margaux 1787, a bottle from Thomas Jefferson’s collection, could have been the most expensive bottle ever sold (valued at $500,000). But when a wine merchant named William Sokolin brought the bottle to a Margaux dinner at the Four Seasons hotel in New York in 1989, a server knocked the bottle over, destroying its contents. The bottle eventually claimed $225,000 from insurers.

Fun fact 2:

Château Margaux 2015’s bottle design is dedicated to the late Paul Pontallier, who died in March 2015 and had been the chateau’s technical and managing director since 1990 after joining the estate in 1983. As well as being Pontallier’s last vintage, 2015 also marks the estate’s 200th anniversary. The black bottle features a screen print of the chateau, its new chai, designed by Sir Norman Foster, and a dedication to Pontallier.

Fun fact 3:

Before he was President of the United States, Thomas Jefferson lived in Paris where he served as Minister to France, during that time he created his own hierarchy of wines. While Chateau Haut Brion was the first official Grand Cru Classe wine imported to US by him, Thomas Jefferson placed Margaux at the top of the list. “There couldn’t be a better Bordeaux bottle,” he noted.
