Fun Fact about Château Mouton Rothschild

Chateau Mouton Rothschild has upgraded to 1st Growth Status in 1973, the only change ever to made to 1855 Classification. Baron Philippe de Rothschild employed a different artist each year to design the label. Throughout past centuries, the price of the wines increased steadily and higher than other Bordeaux wines in First Growth.

Fun Fact 1:

There was no production of the wine under the name Château Mouton Rothschild in 1927, 1930 and 1932 as the quality of these vintages were not good enough to go into the "Grand Vin". The wine from the château therefore was labeled as "Carruades de Mouton-Rothschild" for vintage 1927 (confusing with the current 2^nd wine of Château Lafite Rothschild) and “Mouton Cadet” for 1930, 1932 (the name is currently us for the generic 2^nd label of Château Mouton Rothschild).

Fun Fact 2:

1922 marked Château Mouton Rothschild’s new era when Baron Philippe de Rothschild took over the château. His signature has been shown on Château Mouton Rothschild’s label since 1931 and become one of the unique features for Château Mouton Rothschild’s wine. However, from 1938 to 1941, the signature of Baron Philippe de Rothschild does not appear on the labels of Château Mouton Rothschild, as the Baron was imprisoned in the prison of Vichy.

Fun Fact 3:

The controversial label of the 1993 vintage was created by "Balthus", the pseudonym of Count Balthazar Klossowski de Rola (1908 - 2001) featuring a dreamy, naked adolescent girl in a reclining position, sparked outraged reactions across the Atlantic. The label was disapproved by the United States thus Baroness Philippine de Rothschild, the owner of Chateau Mouton Rothschild then decided to remove the drawing from the label for the US market only.
